- Capital accumulates faster than the thinking around it. Decisions are made one at a time, in different years, for different reasons, and no single view of the whole exists.
- We start with the purpose of the capital and the order in which it will be needed, then work back to structure. Nothing is implemented until the sequence is agreed in writing.
- A written strategy that sets out objectives, constraints and the reasoning behind each decision, reviewed on a defined cycle rather than when markets prompt it.

Research ahead of recommendation.
- Most investment decisions are made under time pressure, on incomplete information, and against a backdrop of opinion that changes weekly.
- We examine the underlying exposure rather than the label, test what has to be true for a position to work, and are willing to hold no view where the evidence does not support one.
- A stated investment rationale you can interrogate — including what would cause us to change our mind, and what we deliberately chose not to do.
Portfolio Strategy
Discipline through the cycle.
- Portfolios drift. Concentration builds quietly, liquidity is discovered only when it is needed, and performance is judged against a benchmark nobody chose.
- We monitor concentration, liquidity and downside against the objectives that were set at the outset, and rebalance to a rule rather than to sentiment.
- Periodic reporting that measures progress against your objectives, states the risks being carried, and records what changed and why.
